Tong Dam (Thong Dam) mangoes, which translated means Black Gold, are a unique variety of Thai Mango that is known for having a strong green skin which protects it from pests and thus these mangoes do not have to be treated with pesticides during any part of the growth process.
They stay green even when ripe (so you have to go by touch and smell to judge ripeness) and when ripe is non-fibrous and sweet with just a hint of coconut. Although less popular than the Nam Dok Mai variety, we love eating these mangoes with sticky rice. Again, do not wait for the skin to become yellow, once the mango becomes semi-firm (not hard) and starts releasing a sweetish smell it is time to eat it. They should also be stored out on the counter and not in the refrigerator until ripe.
Each mango is large and are 2-3 pcs/kg.
